.:. Bible Reflections... OT Salvation .:.
Recently, I was asked the question: “How were the people of the Old Testament times saved?” I answered, “By the Law.” Then, followed a second question: “How were the people saved before Moses and the Law?” I thought for a while then explained that God’s Law existed even before Moses. That the Law came when Sin came to the world. When Man ate the forbidden fruit, there came the knowledge of good and evil – that is the essence of the Law. To attain salvation, Man needed to fulfill the blood sacrifice as directed by the Law for the atonement of sins. But now I question myself. Are men of the old times justified by the Law?! Therefore, are they justified by works, through the submission and adherence to the Law?!
Reading through Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy is like reading a Constitution full of laws, repeated laws, and more laws! (This is of course an exaggeration.) Reading through them might find oneself ending up as grumpy as a Pharisee, yet to think of it, the Law maybe a small price to pay to have order amidst a chaotic world. By such Laws God separated his chosen ones to live in a distinct theocratic community with divine governance. Such a community has been unique in all of human history as far as I am concerned. The Law was created for the purpose of preserving righteousness and for preserving God’s chosen people. It was to be a handbook or an instruction manual on how to live life in the presence of a holy God. Its principle was simple: be faithful in obeying and you will live and be blessed; disobey and you will die and be cursed. Although, this is simpler said than done, obedience was to be the proper response to God’s grace. The Israelites are living by grace quite literally. They were traveling in the wilderness, in the cross-road of their exodus. Behind them was the slavery of Egypt, ahead of them is the Promised Land, and they are in the middle of nowhere. God provided their every need - manna, quail, water (from the rocks), the pillar of fire in during the night and the pillar of cloud during the day, and even victory from their enemies.
Although it was a strict command to follow and obey the Law, salvation does not come from obedience of the Law. Salvation is by grace through faith. The worship sacrifice of blood was mandated by the Law for the atonement of sins. The act of sacrifice itself is a foreshadow, a prolepsis of the act of the Messiah who will be once and for all, the perfect sacrifice for Man’s Sin. The act does not lead to the atonement and forgiveness of sins much more to holiness, but the faith to the act does. I therefore retract my answer to the question asked of me. The Law has never offered salvation. Salvation comes only from God; it is by God’s grace through faith in the Messiah, neither by works nor obedience to the Law so that none may boast!
